MUSCLE CONTRACTIONS

Isometric Contraction

In gymnastics especially on bars gymnasts are supposed to hold body positions. For example, a handstand, the gymnast must show handstand on bars before almost every skill.

Concentric Contraction

Any time a gymnast pushes off for a skill the muscles are shortening in their legs. An example would be the sit position in a back handspring. Another example is the point in which the gymnast brings their feet to the bar for a kip, they are contracting their abdominal muscles.

Eccentric Contraction

Anytime the gymnast straightens their arms, legs or points their toes the gymnast is lengthening their mscles and performing an eccentric muscle contraction. An example would be a split jump because the gymnast legs and toes are pointed and straight and the arms are also straight out to the side.
